THE GREAT GRENADIER

My great-great-grandfather, Pool Field Davis, was known as The Great Grenadier because he was supposed to be the tallest man in the Grenadier Guards. Born in 1820 to a family of stonemasons and sculptors in Inkberrow, Worcestershire, he joined the Grenadier Guards, married a girl from Kent in 1844 and later went off to fight in the Crimean War.
Pool Davis was supposed to have been a hero, saving the colours at the Battle of Inkerman. An account of his bravery was written up in the Cassell’s Illustrated Family Paper for Saturday 27 January and also appeared in the New Zealand Chronicle. The following extracts from this article tell us a great deal about him:
